Peter Pan

Royal & Derngate Theatre

from Friday 14 December 2007 until Sunday 13 January 2008.

What's On Magazine spoke to actress Sophie Lawrence who is set to appear in pantomime alongside David Essex at the Royal and Derngate Theatre this Christmas.

FROM renovating properties to flying across the Derngate stage actress Sophie Lawrence is certainly has many talents.

The former Eastenders star will be playing Peter Pan in a spectacular pantomime on the Derngate stage this December.

Sophie enthused: "It really is a fantastic pantomime and it attracts people of all ages from the age of two to 90!"

She added: "I love how pantomime is often the first experience children have of the theatre. If they don't like the show it could put them off going for life. So I always feel a certain responsibility to make sure they really enjoy themselves. My favourite performance is always the matinee with all the kids. I love it when they really believe in what they are seeing and hearing them laugh and join in!"

As well as having a successful career on the stage Sophie spends a lot of time developing properties and takes on a lot of the work herself.

She explained: "I just can't help myself. If I have some time off I plan to have a rest but then I start l just looking at the internet and before I know it i've found a property to do up!"

Sophie will also be returning to Eastenders next March for another short stint as Pat Evan's step-daughter Diane Butcher.

"When they asked me it really was completely out of the blue," she said." It's been about ten years so I didn't expect them to ask me back now. I am looking forward to it and I start filming directly after the pantomime!"

After playing Peter Pan four times Sophie has become one of the best flyers in the business as during the show she can be seen soaring across the stage.

"I have become a bit of a perfectionist about it actually and video myself so I can see how it looks! The hardest thing is actually trying to balance yourself so you are facing the audience. I love travelling through the air and we have a new trick for audiences to see this year!"

However, being suspended high in the air by only a few wires hasn't always been plain sailing for Sophie as she once found herself bruised and bleeding after being thrown into a brick wall.

She explained: "That was the worst accident I've had while flying. I was panicking more about the children having to see it happening than anything else. Although, they ended up thinking it was all just part of the act!"
Sophie will be joined on stage by the legendary David Essex as the evil Captain Hook who will be appearing in Panto for the first time.

The hilarious Fogwell Flax will also be returning to Royal & Derngate in the role of Smee and Penni Tovey will play the menacing Tinkerbell who will roller-skate her way through Neverland! Playing the role of The Pirates will be the fabulous stunt troupe The Acromaniacs!

Peter Pan promises to have Royal & Derngate's hallmark of quality and value for money entertainment for all the family.

Peter Pan will be at the Royal & Derngate from Friday 14 December 2007 until Sunday 13 January 2008.

A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MOZART @ STANTONBURY CAMPUS THEATRE

Roger Corfe Exhibition

Northampton Museum & Art Gallery

15th Dec '07 - 27th Jan '08

An exhibition of paintings by the late Roger Corfe opens at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery from 15 December until 27 January 2008.

THIS major exhibition of paintings by the late Roger Corfe is a unique chance to see the development of a serious artist's work over a long life-time.

Spanning eight decades, the exhibition shows how his style broadened out with free handling of paint, enabling him to achieve overtones of impressionism in oils and Turneresque fluidity in watercolours. He painted 'en plein air' in all weathers, capturing peaceful rural corners and distant landscapes.

The exhibition takes us on an extensive journey through the places which appealed to him most. Early works include fascinating small etchings and pre-war paintings, and later we see Northamptonshire villages and countryside as well as many other parts of Britain.

Further afield there are records of his visits abroad, including France and Italy. Then we are drawn back to his home and studio at Holcot and glimpses of the immediate surroundings. Roger's constant return to the wildlife reserve at Pitsford Water and his continued study of water and light there is astonishing.

Born in 1912, Roger Corfe studied at Heatherley's School of Art in Chelsea before qualifying as a dental surgeon at Guys Hospital. He spent WW2 in the Royal Army Dental Corps and returned to settle and practice in Northamptonshire.

The exhibition comprises more than 200 paintings of which 160 will be available to buy. There will also be a display of the artist's sketch books and etchings.
